In an unexpected turn of events, a group of Talon Company mercenaries agreed to fight the Super Mutants in Tacoma alongside TSC forces sent to hunt them down. The mercenary captain, who would identify himself only as Josephus, approached Lieutenant Taylor Fields of 4th Platoon under a flag of truce. Together, they hammered out an agreement where Talon forces there would fight with TSC forces against the Super Mutants in exchange for lenient sentences in any war crime tribunals and payment for the job. Together, TSC Marines and the veteran mercenaries under Josephus' command cut a swath through the Super Mutants, hitting a snag only when they encountered a Behemoth flanked by a pair of Overlords. After a hasty retreat where air support was called for, the combined forces continued the attack. True to their word, the mercenaries surrendered themselves after the battle.
When asked why he pursued such a deal, Josephus stated, "I had no intention of getting more of my men killed than they needed to be. If I had insisted on fighting, most of us would be dead fighting the Uglies and the TSC. Further, I hold the TSC in high esteem. Had I been born fifteen years later, I would have enlisted in the Marines. As it was back then, Talon Company was the only one around who were fighting the damned Mutants who would actually take outsiders. It was nasty work at times but at least I helped cull the Frankenstein population."
The battle concluded with only three Marines and five Talon mercenaries wounded and one mercenary dead, a significantly lower number than the estimated fifteen percent casualty rate given prior to the battle.
