Persistent Skill Books v. 0.75 == Installation == Extract the Persistent Skill Books.esp file to your Fallout 3/Data folder and enable that file using the Fallout 3 Launcher, FOMM, or similiar utility. == Description == I was a little irked by the fact that skill books self-destruct after you use them, so I whipped up this mod for a touch of added realism. With this mod installed, after reading a skill book, you will retain a copy of the book, but will no longer be able to increase your skills by using that particular copy. This way you can read books and still sell them, display them in your home, use them as target practice, etc. Another thing that bothered me is that the game's only unique skill book ("Paradise Lost") lacks a unique model or texture, and in fact uses the model for "Lying, Congressional Style." I've replaced the existing model for Paradise Lost with that of a Pre-War Book. It looks bland, but for now it's the best I can do. == Known Issues / Compatibility == The following list includes all of the issues that I have noticed (and have been reported to me). However, I have recently changed this implementation used by this mod and have not thoroughly tested it. I do not anticipate serious issues, however. Please feel free to e-mail me at quinstol@gmail.com if you notice any problems or oddities with the mod that aren't listed below. * In general, there is a chance of conflict/problem with any mod that significantly changes the way skill books work: * This mod will conflict with any mod that adds a script to the game's vanilla skill books. * This is not really an bug and may be obvious, but uninstalling or disabling this mod will cause you to lose all of the "read" books in your inventory and in the world. * Mods that add new skill books to the game (skill books with new form IDs, and not just instances of the preexisting books like the Big Book of Science) will be unaffected by this mod. * For users upgrading from v.0.61 or earlier: any unread books in your inventory from earlier versions will still exhibit all of the issues books those books had from earlier versions of the mod. == Future Plans == * Now that I am back on the scene, I may release an update that makes it so that if you read the book before gaining the Comprehension perk, you will be able to read it again after gaining the perk for the extra skill point. Whether or not I do this largely depends on whether or not I can find a sufficiently clean way of implementing that feature -- I got this mod more or less the way I want it, and I don't want to mess it up with gratuitous features. Also, Comprehension is already powerful enough, and this change would only make it better. * I plan on updating this mod so users of v.61 and earlier who still have older versions of my books lingering in their inventory can update them to the new implementation. == Changelog == v. 0.75 -- Fixed several issues: * The "Books Read" statistic in your PipBoy will now correctly update. * After reading a book, the read version of the book will now immediately appear in the Misc section of your inventory without requiring you to close and re-open the PipBoy. * Improved compatibility overall -- any mod that changes the way Comprehension works, or adds Comprehension-like perks should now work as intended. * Other minor issues. v. 0.61* -- Documentation update. v. 0.61 -- Fixed a version of the Chinese Speial Ops book, which had the wrong name/interface icon. v. 0.6 -- After reading a book, it will be found in the Misc section of your inventory rather than Aid, so it's easier to tell which books you've read and which you haven't. If you have any books in your inventory from 0.5, they will still be in the Aid section of your inventory, but dropping those books and picking them back up will put them in the Misc section. v. 0.5 -- Initial release. == Rights == Feel free to redistribute, repackage or modify this mod as you see fit, but please credit me if you use significant parts of this mod, or if it gives you much inspiration. If you think you can do a better job, I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case -- please have at it! == Credits == Made by Tukka. I can be contacted at quinstol@gmail.com if you have any questions or feedback. Thanks to Bethesda for making Fallout 3 and the GECK. Thanks to the Fallout 3 Nexus and any other free site that is good enough to host this mod. Thanks to TomBrightblade on the Bethesda forums for helping me find the book models.
